Reg is the new Val !

Reg Lancaster took over from Val Ellis as President of the IAC on Sunday 26th October at the AGM. Reg was Chairman of IAC and at that time wrote about his film life - see it here.
The AGM itself went smoothly with Alan Atkinson taking over as Chairman and Linda Gough, no doubt thankfully, stepping down.

The formal meeting was part of a weekend event hosted by North Thames Region at Jury's Inn, Milton Keynes. As usual outings were part of the package and delegates had a chance to visit Woburn Safari Park and Bletchley Park - the latter not only pays tribute to the WWII code-breakers but is also home to the Projected Picture Trust. Still from 'The Trap'.
The Trap

The annual inter-regional competition, the Mermaid, was won by Bob Lorrimer's The Trap from NERIAC. Bob writes about making it here. The Mini-Mermaid competition for one-minute films was won by Mike Shaw's The Mona Lisa Smile representing SERIAC.

Guest-of-honour Andrew Vale in his fascinating talk paid tribute to the quality of cutting in The Trap.

Andrew is a Television Trainer with the BBC. Many experienced delegates rated his lecture the best in years - and everyone envied his Spanish villa.

David Jackson
David Jackson

David Jackson - the IAC NLE tutor and co-ordinator of the iac-nle web forum - gave useful advice and tips on using Adobe software and his favourite extras. He concentrated on management of clips before NLE using Scenalyzer and the features of Premiere Pro CS3 &CS4 that might tempt you to upgrade. Later in the day he talked about using After Effects to enhance DVD motion menus and DVD authoring using Encore CS3.

Tom Hardwick
Tom Hardwick

Tom Hardwick whose regular columns in Film and Video Maker make him a household name amongst IAC members spoke about gadgets, "run-and-gun" shooting techniques, the pros and cons of various camcorders and recording media. He showed many clips and convinced us all of the necessity for a backup-camcorder running all the time during live events.

In addition, DVC, the Digital Editing Computer Company which provides the equipment that many of us use  proved their skills when a crashed hard-disk disrupted their demonstrations - the show was quickly "back on the air". Many delegates were intrigued by the Edius system and no doubt credit cards were burning in their pockets as they checked out the kit on display.

The lecture rooms were chilly but apart from that all went well. Delegates enjoyed the company of old friends and made new ones. The next get-together will be for BIAFF - Britain's major festival for non-commercial film makers, 23-26 April 2009 hosted by CEMRIAC at The Chesterfield Hotel, Chesterfield.
